Greener washing machine
June 9th, 2008 byIt was never going to be too long before washing machines received a greener makeover. Now Reuters reports (via The Alternative Consumer) that Xeros Ltd, a company originating from the University of Leeds, are introducing a new, and affordable (their claim, not ours) washing machine. As taken from the Reuters website:
Xeros Ltd, which has been spun out of the University of Leeds to commercialize the technology, said on Monday the new machines would use less than 2 percent of the water and energy of a conventional washing machine.
Plastic chips are used to remove dirt and stains from clothes, leaving them dry and reducing energy consumption as there is no need to use a dryer after the washing cycle, Xeros said in a statement.
The Xeros machine aims to run on just a single cup of water and thus reduce both the energy consumption in spinning/drying the clothes, and the water consumption needed for conventional washing machines.
