Do you want to buy a greener computer?

August 5th, 2008 by sara

Then the best thing you can possibly do right now is read MetaEfficient’s excellent review of Green PCs. Justin at MetaEfficient has reviewed five of the greenest desktop computers available today, and included some great information and advice for people looking to green up their PC.

But how do you just the green credentionals of a computer? Well Justin answers that too:

The two most important factors are power consumption, and the elimination of hazardous components inside the machine. Other factors such as the efficiency of the power supply, packaging and the manufacturer’s support for recycling programs are also important. Overall, there are a huge number of factors to assess, but thankfully there are now some eco-certifications that make it easier. The most important certifications are EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and Energy Star 4.0.

Coming out top of his green review are Dell’s Studio Hybrid, Lenovo’s Thinkcentre M57P, Apple’s Mac mini, Zonbu’s Desktop Mini and the CherryPal PC.

If we can agree on one thing, we certainly seem to have come a long way from sticking a plank of Bamboo on a laptop.
