Is saving the planet a big enough reward?

August 11th, 2008 by sara

The biggest reward of shopping green is you save the planet. Your children, your grandchildren and all your future generations will get to enjoy this lovely planet of ours. Future generations wont deem you an accomplice in the destruction of their planet.

It’s not a level playing field

That’s the big picture anyway. But the big picture gets clouded by the daily dilemmas and struggles of our lives. Time, ego and money become more important than saving the planet. That’s why people don’t learn where their nearest recycling plants are, or spend a little extra to purchase from a retailer with less suspect manufacturing credentials.

This puts green retailers are a disadvantage, they simply can’t compete on price against larger retailers who use cheap labour. So green retailers do the only thing they can. They put up the biggest green beacon possible and pray it attracts those that care enough to shop green.

That’s great, but it puts the mass-market (and decent profits) beyond their reach.

So how should green shoppers be rewarded

The solution then is rewarding green shoppers with something more than a planet. Something that can even the playing field. In our case, we offer points. It’s like a green loyalty card. If you buy green products you earn green points. These green points can be exchanged for tangible products.

These products not only save you money, but also encourage you to shop greener in the future. It means that you can spend a few pennies more on a green product, because it gives you a more immediate return. You can justify it to your spouse, friends or family.

This is obviously a topic very close to our hearts here at MoreEco. But I really do want to know what you think, do green shoppers need to be rewarded? Or by the very nature of shopping green are they rewarding themselves?
